Mf Doom - Mm Food

October 13, 2007 | Comments (0)

"MM..Food" was originally dropped in 2004 off of Rhymesayers Entertainment but has been out of print for quite a while and was a very rare CD. But it has been finally re-released with a DVD included. If you don't know, DOOM wears a mask everywhere he goes in public, he is not photographed without it. He has many aliases that he releases LP's under as well such as King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Zev Love X, and Metal Fingers. The mask idea comes from the Fantastic Four based on the character DR. Doom. Also, some of the beat samples come from the show as well.

DOOM is lyrically...

Ugk - Underground Kings

October 4, 2007 | Comments (2)

The legendary, dirty south duo "UGK" has finally dropped a new LP titled "Underground Kings." This is their seventh album, and they are hitting hard as ever in the rap game. The first release under UGK Records is an expected success. Members Bun B and Pimp C are still proving they're true pioneers in the south.

This is their first album release since 2001, mainly due to the fact Pimp C's incarceration in 2000 for pulling out a gun at a mall during a scuffle. After Pimp C was jailed, Bun B was appearing on what seemed like every mainstream rap CD to keep the UGK tradition....

Kurupt And J Wells - Digital Smoke

July 20, 2007 | Comments (1)

True west coast rap. Who do you think of? You probably think of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Ice Cube, and a few more. But one of the forgotten members is Kurupt. Known as ˝ of Tha Dogg Pound, with his partner, Daz Dillinger. Kurupt isn't on the same level as those others mentioned, but is one of those true gangsta rap pioneers in the west. If you didn't know, Kurupt was a lyrical beast in the early to somewhat late nineties, entering the game through Snoop and Dre. But as time progressed, he seemed to have lost a step, that aggression and swagger. He also just got flat out lazy. But this...

Young Jeezy The Inspiration.jpg Review Picture

Young Jeezy - The Inspiration

April 29, 2007 | Comments (9)

Jeezy is back for his sophomore LP, "The Inspiration", off of Def Jam records and the CTE imprint. Jeezy's lyrics still lack a little cleverness and originality, but he still pulls off a credible CD.

For this CD, he recruited R. Kelly, Timbaland, Keyshia Cole, Slick Pulla, Blood Raw, and T.I. "The Inspiration" isn't as good as Thug Motivation, it lacks the bangers like "Go Crazy" and "And Then What." But he still manages to make a reasonably consistent album overall. Mostly because of the production with producers like Shawty Redd, Midnite Black, DJ Toomp, The Runners,...

Consequence - Dont Quit Your Day Job

April 29, 2007 | Comments (4)

This is Consequence's debut album "Don't Quit Your Day Job!" Of off Columbia, and Kanye West's imprint, GOOD (Getting Out Our Dreams). Cons has been around since the early to mid nineties but never released an album. He is also known as Q-Tip's cousin, the lead rapper in A Tribe Called Quest. Cons is more of a dedicated MC, which is a good thing as tt makes for higher quality music. His music is nothing but calm and collective. This LP doesn't have a poor song on it. There are a few miscues, but consistent nonetheless. He has a video out currently from the song "Callin' Me," it is a decent...

Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Chit

April 10, 2007 | Comments (1)

Tha Dogg Pound continue their long, successful career with their new LP "Dogg Chit." The cover and title is reminiscent of their debut together, "Dogg Food," from 1995. Daz and Kurupt have been doing their thing since they made their debut on on Dr. Dre's "The Chronic." Daz has always been a great producer and gets back on that, unlike the disappointment, "Cali iz Active." All the guests on that album didn't fit. But as for this one, it's a different story. Kurupt sounds as motivated as he has been in quite a while, he sounded washed up a few months ago. But that isn’t the case this time....

B.g. And The Chopper City Boys - We Got This

March 25, 2007 | Comments (1)

The Chopper City Boys come out with their debut "We Got This", off of Koch Records and the Chopper City imprint. The Boys include Hakim, V.L. Mike, Sniper, and Gar. The best lyricist out of that group would have to be V.L. Mike. He provides some hot verses on this album. Hakim has his moments, but Sniper and Gar need improvement. But this LP sure could use more B.G., he was on only 4 songs. The one guest appearance is Mercedes.

The production comes from Coree Benton, Bass Heavy, David Banner, Kidd, Crack Tracks, 1 Trak Minds, Tone-Tone, and Beat Doctor. The production...

Gang Starr Mass Appeal: The Best Of Gang Starr.jpg Review Picture

Gang Starr - Mass Appeal The Best Of Gang Starr

March 14, 2007 | Comments (1)

Gang Starr was a popular rap group which formed in the year of 1987 and remain around, but album releases how been declared as over. Gang Starr simply consists of Guru and DJ Premier. DJ Premier is one of the best producers out there. Guru is a very talented rapper, with the exception of his slow start earlier in his career. DJ Premier has produced for well-known rappers like Nas and Notorious B.I.G. Gang Starr is basically the definition of hip-hop, they’re as hip-hop will get. They were a force in the rap game until 2003.

The albums they have released are No More Mr. Nice...

Nas Hip Hop Is Dead.jpg Review Picture

Nas - Hip Hop Is Dead

February 23, 2007 | Comments (5)

Nasty Nas is back with his Def Jam debut, "Hip Hop is dead." The last LP released by Nas was "Street's Disciple" back in 2004. But when Nas claims hip-hop is dead, he's talking about people commercializing the game and rap becoming a marketing commodity. Rap has evolved since the 80's and 90's and Nas feels that it has not been for the better.

Familar names in the game included Notorious B.I.G., 2pac, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Busy Bee, Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash. Hip Hop now includes the likes of 50 cent, T.I., Jay-z, and The Game.

There are however...

Clipse Hell Hath No Fury.jpg Review Picture

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

December 16, 2006 | Comments (7)

This is Clipse's long awaited sophomore LP, Hell Hath, No Fury, taken from Star Trak
records and Re-Up Gang Records. This album has been delayed many times before and has been threatening to surface for around 4
years, since their impressive debut, Lord Willin' back in 2002.

While Lord Willin' is debatably more adept, this new release also merits high recommendations. Clipse's lyrics have evolved to the next level in terms of complexity and tend to come across as more advanced.

You can always depend on The Neptunes to deliver pin point...

Rhymefest Blue Collar.jpg Review Picture

Rhymefest - Blue Collar

August 26, 2006 | Comments (4)

"Blue Collar", the highly anticipated debut album release from Chi-town native Rhymefest stems from the attention surrounding Fest when it was made public knowledge that he had been working closely with Kanye West and had contributed greatly to Kanye's previous material. The single "Brand New", featuring Kanye, was the single and brought Fest very much into the public domain.

Known for his lyrical content, delivery in terms of story telling and most importantly rhyming ability, Fest does nothing to disappoint and delivers all three factors well. "Tell a Story" encapsulates...

Busta Rhymes The Big Bang.jpg Review Picture

Busta Rhymes - The Big Bang

July 14, 2006 | Comments (10)

This is Busta's first new album in four years and his debut off of Dr. Dre's label Aftermath. Surprisingly, Busta has never sounded so mature with songs like "In the Ghetto", "Been Through The Storm, and "You Can't Hold The Torch." But having said that, the CD is also overloaded with more guests than neccessary. The exceptions to this were Stevie Wonder, while Busta and Q-Tip on the mic also sounded good together. While Rick James middling and Swizz Beatz should stick to producing. But it appears an improved effort from Busta than his prior CDs.

Here is a breakdown of some...

Ice Cube - Laugh Now Cry Later

July 13, 2006 | Comments (7)

Ice Cube released "Laugh now, Cry later" on June 6th, 06. This is his first CD in 6 years after two disappointing CDs which were "War and Peace vol. 1 & 2" He released it under Lench Mob once again.

Here is a breakdown of some of the individual songs:

Why We Thugs - Lead off single from the album which shows a maturing Cube emerging and stating his intent for the remainder of the album.

Laugh now, Cry later the title track is one the best on the album, accompanied by a solid beat and solid lyrics.

Go to Church-Feat. Snoop Dogg &...

Eminem Curtain Call.jpg Review Picture

Eminem - Curtain Call

December 11, 2005 | Comments (11)

With the release of this greatest hits album, entitled Curtain Call, it now appears likely that Eminem's time for full time album recordings has come to an end. This album's intention is to sum up Em's career thus far and remind everyone of the long list of hits that he has produced. Of course, many hits have been discluded from the album, but there are just so many to choose from and the choices remain evenly spread selections from each and every main album.

Basically, Curtain Call is a package of all his singles. “My Name Is” and “Guilty Conscience" are highlights from...

Kanye West Late Registration.jpg Review Picture

Kanye West - Late Registration

September 19, 2005 | Comments (6)

Kanye West is back, following his previous album 'College Dropout', which was a revolutionary album ranked highly and one of the most highly acclaimed and successfull of 2004.

'Late Registration' carried a lot of expectation, but was never likely to live up to the standard of his debut release. Having said that, it does come extremely close in comparison aided by many top guest appearances, including Jay-Z, Nas, The Game, Consequence, Jamie Foxxx and Maroon 5.

Kanye's own lyrical delivery has only slightly improved, yet the production and content remain...
